Today gnome and mac desktop have this features on the file manager...
you can play automatically the file from file-manager hovering the file with mouse ....dolphin didn't but there is on some window ,like uploading something for example, as you can see in the screenshot there is automatically play and it works fine... i have to try with phonon backend vlc but for the most of files it works really well think one moment you have a cellphone || video-camera ||videostuff (i have nokia 5800 with tons of video picitures..and audio) you took for example just the file renaming. you have 100 videos with all dsc000****.avi names you have the same photo preview.. black\white (cellphone especially ) to pick the right video ,and rename it or erase the bad clips, you have to play them by selecting one and click on play button (info panel ) this is not comfortable. Gnome user and Mac can play automatically video and audio and do the renaming operation in a faster way. but there are other example i have here , i use to record a lots of audio conversations and ... of course i can't remember the name dsc0023455754754.wav is what i have recorded now and the dsc000023455754755.wav is what i recorded 2 days ago.. so typically you have always to open a wav editor or a player to understand which file you have under the arrow... this is really not comfortable. Kde is a mature destkop that has a the video\audio preview but it's not comfortable. a simple play automatically option on dolphin will resolve the problem. NOTE on the OPEN\UPLOAD windows there is already this feature but in dolphin no. should be pretty easy to do i guess and i have seen a lots of people that are using gnome and often they said : dolphin is lacking about some feature like this one.. we live in the multimedia world... and they right Multimedia video photo audio stuff are very important for everyone...

you should consider that dolphin already do a preview(play on information panel )... but it doesn't play automatically hovering the file it's only a option that is missing not the feature.
and you should think that every desktop out there can do this... because it's a comfortable feature: For example, if you have a lots of audio files with THE SAME NAME and you want delete one and rename another,... you should open a audio program... for what renaming and understand which file you should pick ?! come on it's so ridiculous. well this feature can be customized ... like that screenshot if you want you can get it if you don't ... of course it shouldn't be activated by default.. |

This is already implemented in the file open/save dialog.

It's not the first time someone asks for this behaviour on the fora I visit. However, some people doesn't want this feature at all (they only want to play it via the information pane when THEY click play)...
However an option in Dolphin's settings to let the information pane playing/previewing it automatically when hovering a file, would be very nice (so people can CHOOSE, and that's what Linux is about).... So +1 Thanks in advance!

Quite early in the KDE 4 development I spoke to the Dolphin developer about this, as I liked to be able to preview video. He said that he didn't realise that anyone used preview on video, and didn't think there was much interest in it. I did get the impression that if we can convince him that enough people are interested he would put it on his to-do list.

I don't understand - "Show Tooltips" does exactly that. It shows much the same information as is normally on the Information pane. At least, that's what I see. However, development has gone on without my noticing it - and thanks for pointing me to it. I find that in the Information pane I can preview video. It certainly works on my .mpg and .avi files.

Yes, show tooltips do very much, except for playing audio (if I'm not wrong)...
=> to preview audio, you always have to click on the play button in the Information Pane (following some people, it should be possible to configure it that it's played automatically....) That's all (adding a setting in the preferences of Dolphin, which links to that behavior)

Both audio and video play from the Information panel here, but not from the tooltip.

i have tried and i have found that works.but it sucked a bit because it need of sox || ffplay
so i have a modified the method a little bit to work just with ffplay , now i have a method to play both audio and video with ffplay , if you have an audio you just listen the music without ffplay's window and if you have a video you can watch your video here the blog entry http://nowardev.wordpress.com/2013/11/1 ... ng-a-file/ i have made a video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZSnQb3BAeM |
