It would be a great feature if Marble could generate Garmin GPS maps.
Since recently I use Marble for browsing the OpenStreetMap maps, and I also use the OpenStreetMap maps on my Garmin GPS device. But the OpenStreetMap data has to be converted to a usable Garmin map before you can send it to your GPS device. As far as I know this isn't easy for the average user. A website exists where you can select a portion of the map and let the server make a map for you: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php This is a really nice service from an OpenStreetMap enthusiast, but it is only a one man effort. Also, as a user you have to wait (sometimes a few days) before the map is ready. So I think it would be great if there was a program that made it easy to make your own map, and I think Marble would be perfect for it. I think this feature would benefit a lot of people: -People like me with a GPS device, who could build their own maps. -Marble community: a lot of GPS users would start using Marble to make their own maps (to see how popular this service is: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopi ... =2625&p=31 31 pages, most topics have less than 1) -OpenStreetMap: GPS users don't depend on only one guy to build their maps, so OpenStreetMap GPS maps would be better available. And as a final thought, the guy on that website uses a open source program (mkgmap) to make these maps, so maybe this feature can be implemented without much effort. |
