I don't know how easy is to implement, but I believe that it will be a huge help for users not using only English. When a textbox has focus, or when you hover the cursor over a textbox and the caret appears, it should display the language indicator beside the cursor and/or beside the blinking caret. This way it's more immediate to check what language you have selected than checking on the cluttered tray.
