Most of us have got at least a desktop, a notebook and perhaps even a netbook (never mind KDE mobile...).

I for one make good use of KDE's extensive possibilities for fiddling - it behaves just like I want it to.

Wouldn't it be great if, at the click of a button, I could sync my devices so the latest greatest change on my desktop is also on my notebook (incl. PIM...).

EDIT:

Looks like there is a bunch calling for this feature:

All in all nearly 200 votes and there might well be more...

No, I haven't done it, I'd like to see it done, though.

afaik you'd need to copy the following directories over
~/.kde(4)
~/.config/akonadi
~/.config/kde.org

I _think_ that if you kept those three synced you'd be alright but it is a ton of stuff, most of which probably not necessary, some - like the amarok database - not even useful.

The current development along these lines is with OwnCloud. Still a bit experimental though. http://owncloud.org/index.php/Main_Page

The way that I would like this to work is to have a generic file syncing application with support for KDE (and other) settings.

Also it should be able to hold differences you want between different hosts. For example I want to sync emails, recently sent addresses and personal details between KMail on my dekstop and netbook but keep very different interface options on them.

Sounds like a good idea but...
Would it sync everything or just look like it did?

What's the point, really? Just copy few folders, beginning with $HOME/.kde4 on USB stick or move to Dropbox or whatever, copy to another machines $HOME and you're good to go.

To be more specific, this would just open security risks, incompatibilities in configs (think syncing KDE 4.6.3 with other distro's 4.7-rc2 for example), and in the end doesn't remove so much burden from user.

@ daedaluz

I agree it is not KISS (and as Arch user I like KISS) but it would greatly simplify life for most users, I'm sure.

Also, simply copying over ~/.kde4 is not always desirable as mentioned in my previous post.It also depends on which widgets are installed and what have you. I think to make this work you'd need a decently worked and tested script.

I think this would be better off as a KDE/Qt front end for rsync designed for this exact purpose. By keeping it generic you can also sync non-KDE user data (~/Documents etc.)

Fun part would be handling conflicting changes. If I change a file on both laptop and desktop after a sync in different ways what would happen? I don't know how rsync handles this.
