Greetings my dear fellows.
Let me show you what I'm currently thinking of : http://wstaw.org/m/2011/04/30/PureAwesomeness.png (and yes, I suck at mock-ups) Right now, activities aren't very accessible (you have to search them to find them). The desktop grid is most certainly the awesomest effect of Kwin : and the only way I can think of to make it even awesomer is to give it the power of activities. I'm thinking of a vertical panel that would be on the left or right of the virtual desktops, with the ability to switch activities and to drop windows from one activity to the other. [I was also thinking on closing windows by throwing them out'of the desktop grid display, but that would be for another idea !] |

Are you aware there's a option to "alt-tab" between activities like windows.
I've set it to meta-tab (or maybe that was the default). But this doesn't make your idea any less valid. Just saying that there are already ways to navigate through activities.

I have tought same thing that switching activities should be as easy and informative as the desktop grid+presentation effect in KWin. But last week in blog post about Plasma developers summit there was a comment that it would be impossible because X11 limits.

I made these mockups a while ago and it seems to be the same general idea.
