I just set up a desktop background (wallpaper) picture slide show with some varied versions of a picture that i found on kdelook. I thought to myself "man that looks good". I was all proud n' such of my meager accomplishment... and then as usual i got to thinking, wouldn't it look even better with some transition effects. fade in/out, cross-fade, doors, flip in/out, break apart/repair, etc...
I'd be a fan if it were implemented. Granted i know its a silly aesthetic design idea, but it'd be pretty cool none-the-less.

At the moment background pictures are CPU-rendered by Plasma. In the future background rendering is to be separated from Plasma and rendered by KWin thus taking advantage of graphic card powered compositing. This will likely enable various transition effects. And how I know the KWin team they are certainly after that

You mean wallpaper effects? Could you please change he subject as so and not "background" as it does not tell right away what it is about?
I like the idea that wallpaper would have different effects to be changed. Even that most would be very annoying but I think many would like some effects like "dropped" or "nailed" where wallpaper drops with one corner little lower than other or that wallpaper corner is like nailed and swings out. |

@BajK (for some reason quoting does not work...)
Wallpaper has nothing to do with windowmanager. Window manager only manages windows, not wallpapers. Plasma's job is to manage wallpaper as well as Plasma includes same functions as old KDesktop (when KDE SC was KDE) and its responsibilities. Plasma/KDE platform will have (already have?) accelerated graphics and so on wallpaper can be rendered smoothly. Because windowmanager (KWin) has some functions, they can not be used for purposes what does not belong to them. |
