Password Generation and KWallet

Thu Jun 02, 2011 5:05 pm
Passwords are a nightmare. Using the same password across multiple services is a security risk, using all-lower-case passwords is a security risk, and remembering which of the 5-odd upper-case-lower-case-numbers-and-symbols passwords you now have to remember you used for one of the plethora of services you subscribed to is, itself, a nightmare.

Fortunately, we have a solution: KWallet. Hurray! :D But you still have to create the passwords yourself, and it's difficult to transfer wallets across systems. Boo! >:(

So the first problem is the one I'm addressing with this idea. The idea is simple: have a right-click option for password fields in KHTML and Webkit-kpart to generate a password and save it in KWallet. Also, in parts of KDE where you can create new accounts for services (at the moment, that's openDesktop services, but I imagine this expanding to social networking services that KDE integrates well with (I'm looking at you, Akonadi)), include a button next to the password field to do the same thing would be great. Now, you only have to remember one password!

And by the way, when I said it's difficult to transfer wallets across systems, I lied outright. It's actually incredibly easy. Just open up KWalletManager and drag the wallet you want to a folder in Dolphin, Konqueror, Plasma or anything else that uses the Dolphin KPart really, local (for Dropbox/Ubuntu One users) or networked (for Samba shares, SSH connections or pretty much anything else KParts support). If you read this and I just blew your mind, it demonstrates a different problem - it's not obvious enough. When a user first sets up their wallet, it should tell them that:

  • It means they only need to remember one password; and
  • They can drag wallets into folders, onto USB sticks or what-have-you to use on different KDE computers.
