It often annoys me that I can either just completely enable the previews for certain file types or disable.

I would like to be able to separately turn on and off previews (per file type) for the main view and for the side panel in Dolphin (and file selection dialogs).

My reasoning is two-fold:
  • In many cases small previews just don't make any sense. This is especially true for all sorts of text documents, where unless you use humongous icons in the main view you can't see anything really. But in the bigger preview in the side panel, you can actually see enough to tell you something about the file.
  • I like pretty icons and find it a pity that I can't see them in the main view, if I just want the comfort of a quick glance of what the content of the file is.

Ideally what I would like to see is to be have an small checkbox in the settings to show previews in the side panel of any file if I mouse-over or select it. And just keep the settings as they are for the main view.

Another option, for power-users, would be to have two columns of check-boxes for each file type — previews in the main view; and previews in the sidebar. This might not look too pretty though, as it would turn the settings effectively into a checkbox table.

Current status with previews on:

It's time to prod some serious buttock! ;)
