Google has its own language translation matrix "translate.google.com". KDE/Gnome should have one as well.
With the open-source community, this should be (in my mind) an easy task. People from around the world contributing to create a machine translation engine, which is modular so that a user can select the languages they prefer to use (I know it can get pretty huge with all the languages that KDE/Gnome supports) and to use it as part of the desktop. Everyone can contribute by inputting dictionaries, phrases, grammar, etc. The engine could be used with document/email composing, real-time IM'ing, book reading, or web browsing. It can be the desktop's universal translator / rosetta stone. I am not a programmer; just a user. And I would use this as much as I use the web browser. So what do you say? Can the community support such a project? |

Approving this just as a curiosity on what other users think. Personally it seems like a very tangential idea to the kde project.

The problem in developing this is not that it is not really in KDE software realm, but developing something like this is not a job for somebody who is a normal developer.
You need a bunch of machine learning, AI experts (rank of PhDs) and a lot of code peeps (because scientists wouldn't want to write code) So, with my both devel and sci hats on, I'd say that this would be a friggin' cool project, but rather impossible. |

Agree with what ivan said. I'm going to leave this approved for a while - if it doesn't have a massive support base which might motivate some developers to start something, then I shall mark this as WONTFIX.
