Hello guys.
As I remember in kde3.x.x splash screen was "working" until hole kde desktop and aplication from last session and autostart aplication was lunched, and the desktop that I got was ready to work. I miss it so much. Now great kde4.x.x desktop works like that ugly unliked microsoft windows. I get my desktop, but all the widgets and application are just starting, and my processor work on 100@kb_pc and I can do nothing for a while. it will be better when the splash screen will fade out when the deskop is ready and steady. its my idea. |

There is a new splash screen implementation being released for 4.8 (not as default, though). However I have not yet come across any evidence that this new splash screen keeps on showing loading and only stops after Plasma widgets and saved session applications.
As such, this is a valid idea.

Well, I want to say that I don't care so much if still programs and services are loading while I am on desktop as long as I can just use desktop.
EDIT: Found this http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2011/11/plas ... es-48.html For many big number releases I had enjoyed about fast login. And now since 4.7 I started to feel what many have hated. When I log in, I get 5-8 second lag when everything stops as something gets started. It is not nepomuk or strigi (those have worked perfectly) but I think it is akonadi. What I just yesterday made working again because KMail2 demands it. (So I need to test out does login work now without lag) The whole idea of splash screens is cutting peoples opinions to half. Either they like it or not. Splash screen is better than waiting something to happen, by my opinion. But if you can show something without waiting longer than 1-2 seconds, then splash screen is not good. Many thinks that splash screen is used in applications or login only because it looks cool and it is just a effect whats purpose is to slow them down to get using wanted software. And when software has a splash screen, they say it should be removed and make the software load faster. It ain't so easy with so many layers in software system and every layer slows down all layers top of it. And even single application can have demands to load many functions from the beginning to work. But I can understand the original poster and hopefully the new splash allows to grow delay when it vanish so user can sit at workable computer. Do I remember correctly and the new splash was done with QML and it was tied to new KDM as well? I just faintly remember reading about it but don't remember exact technical features. And was it about application splashes as well that we could finally have non-rectangular formats and more like next? |
