I use openSUSE 12.1 with KDE desktop.
i think one of problems in KDE is that I cannot fined all the appearance features such as Color, Style, desktop them etc in one place. i have to every time search the word in kickoff to find the feature. i think it should be available to put all the appearance features under one menu item. |

We do not need menu to KickOff (or any other), as they belongs to systemsettings.
If I remember correctly, openSUSE does add stuff to menu what does not belong there in such manner. But I do agree on that thing, systemsettings has a mess when it comes to desktop style (plasma, mouse cursor, splash, kwin) and application style (style, colors, icons, fonts, emoticons). Somehow, even today after the separation (two years now?) I mistake those two and I continuesly need switch between them when wanted to switch full Oxygen style to something else because KWin settings are in another and style settings in other. |

Hi all,
I have to fully agree with this. You never know where to look when you want to configure splashscreen, background, styles... A more user-centric vision would be better. |

What about having an Appearances app (separate from systemsettings, or accessible through systemsettings) which has links to all of the different appearance/theme settings dialogs (after all, you can access them individually using krunner)? There would be two different ways to get to the different settings dialogs (3 counting krunner), but systemsettings would keep its current layout, and there would be a central location to access all appearance/theme settings (and it could even have a new page for customizing activities' and desktops' wallpapers)

I'd have something like this for system settings:
KDE 4.10.1 Archlinux x86_64 on both laptops

Now every setting is inside SystemSettings (Single App) and KRunner has link to every single of them... Just type to krunner "Mouse" and you get listins like: - Mouse (Mouse settings) - Cursor theme (Customize the mouse cursor appearance) - Launch Feedback (Choose application-launch feedback style) - KMouseTool (Automatic Mouse Click) Try out "Theme", "Window" or "icons".... Same thing with KickOff, you can just type those and you see them. All of them are in single place now, separated to two different system settings locations because settings what they has, are separated things. Workspace appearance: Plasma, mouse, KWin themes Application appearance: Style (widgets), icons, colors, fonts, emotions Why we have that separation? Because KDE SC is not released only as whole software collection to Linux. Windows or OS X users can install just few of the applications what belongs to KDE SC or just some other KDE applications and then they might not have at all workspace related settings. Like they use different windowmanager instead KWin or they have other shell than plasma or mouse theme is draw by other software. Like when user opens a KDE application in GNOME 3.2, the application follows "Application appearance" settings, but same time follows Gnome 3.2 settings about Window manager, cursor icon and shell. Now this brainstorm (I think it should be a discussion partition on openSUSE forums) is about openSUSE MENU structure, not about systemsettings or KickOff. The whole idea of SystemSettings was to gather all KDE and system oriented settings to single place where user can set them, instead hunting down all of them separated in menus. |

Yes okay, I get it. BUT I thought the point of this idea was to have a new _more logical systemsettings app_ with for example all graphical settings together in the same section. I never tried to use krunner. but works great indeed

Then we broke the KDE SC and we need to start maintaining a two versions of systemsettings. As even now, KDE Plasma + KWin and KDE Applications are two different areas what are themed and used separately. Even that many of us use them both, there are many who use only a KDE applications or who use only KDE Plasma and KWin but not KDE applications. |
