Hi all, I've just thinking about a new idea. What a waste of time to open KDE menu to run an application, or even clicking on a shortcut.

This can be a cool and new feature to add.

Here's a mockup

Image

Just hold the click button on your mouse, select the app and realease the click to launch !

It can be used for apps, bookmarks, folders, etc...

What do you think about it ?

Does this plasmoid move with mouse pointer ?
The problem with plasmoid is that they can't be used when a window cover them

Plasmoid or not, the idea is about the navigation priciple.
And that is a classical Daisy Wheel as present in some older systems. For example my WinCE operated HP IPaq some 10 years ago featured such menus. They work fine for pen driven handheld devices. A good and practical thing, only limited to smaller numbers of entries, otherwise things get confusing.

One more aspect I remember, since I like these type of menus in general. At least for certain, limited purposes:

Back in the old WinCE days such menus were opened upon a very interesting pointer event: making a *long* click with the pen on the desktop background or an item. A long click means click and hold for a second. Keep in mind that there is only a single button when you operated your desktop with a pen, you can only click, there is no left or right tip you could click with.

I like this type of pointer event. It appears very intuitive to me: a normal click to call, open or activate something. Hold down longer to get deeper into the possibilities offered: additional options, properties and so on.
I checked back then if that is an option to enhance X, but found out that such thing is hard to implement. It would mean changes to the underlying X system, not just code to evaluate what is happening. So I dropped the issue and coded other things instead :-)

But this might be of interest for the new Plasma Active Surface. Even though we have multitouch events now such special event still appears intuitive to me.

Sounds crazy !
Make it look like operas right click shortcuts, using the plasma theme, and also allow the user to customize this menu. It could be AWESOME !

right lick on wallpaper -> desktop settings.

I've associated the entry "application menu" to vertical scroll.
If you scroll an application launcher menu appear.

OK but it wont work everywhere, it just works on the desktop, the idea is, make that possible wherever your pointer is, and you have to browse app menu to launch the corresponding app, a wheel may be faster and more intuitive.
