I use dolphin as my default file manager, with Grid Arrangement set to "Columns", and View mode as "Icons" (I use small icons).
This works well for, say, displaying the contents of my music folder, but even with "Text Width" set to "Huge", it only affords me a limited number of characters before the dreaded "..." cuts off the filename at the end. [edit]: here is an example, where you can see some of the filenames are truncated: http://i.imgur.com/mnyKI.jpg [edit]: and here is an example of the preferred view (this is from Nautilus): http://i.imgur.com/mkWdL.jpg So, my suggestion is to add an option for "Text Width" to be set to a larger value than "Huge" for those of us with filenames which are larger than "Huge" permits to be shown in their entirety. Perhaps an option for a user-specified value, or perhaps a radio-box value or two beyond "Huge". Heck, maybe even "Maximum", which would set the "Text Width" to the maximum number of characters in the filenames in that folder. I don't know the code-specific limitations on the above suggestions, but at least another step or two (maybe a slider?) beyond "Huge" would make a big difference. Thanks for allowing me to add my suggestion, and thanks for KDE and Dolphin.

Set your view mode to "Compact". (middle option)
It's designed for exactly what you want. |

This is already implemented in the 2.0 version of Dolphin.

Thanks Hans, is there a PPA for just upgrading Dolphin to this version, or would I have to upgrage KDE to a 2.8* version to get it? |

As far as I know you have to upgrade kdelibs etc. (4.8.x) as well, but I'm not sure.

Thanks again Hans. I went ahead and upgraded to KDE 4.8.2 and now I've got the new Dolphin 2.0, and the filenames now show as the full length that they are, so YAY!
Thanks again! |
