KDE4 already includes Juk and Amarok, but I was thinking that there should be a very simplistic program written in QT4 that would play MP3 or OGG files. It would be very simple, maybe just a play and stop button.

By default KDE4 will use Juk or Amarok, which takes longer to load and playing an individual file can overwrite your playlist. Having a simple KDE4 MP3 player would allow a user to click on an audio file and start playing it quickly, without waiting for a larger application like Juk or Amarok to load.

What about Dragon Player? I always set up KDE to play music files in dragon player.

What about being able to play Music files directly in Dolphin?
Sometimes you just want to check out a song a friend passed you an a USB stick. Starting Amarok takes way too long (on my old laptop)
Interfacewise it could be done by displaying a little play botton in the upper right corner of the icon when hovering it. Similar to the "+" which allows you the select files.
As there are already 2 music applications (Amarok and juk) I would rather not add a third app but integrate it in the file manager.

I am pretty sure they are already working on this. Video files, too.

What about Qmmp? Granted, it's a Qt4 app rather than a KDE4 one but it's more or less a xmms/winamp clone (although admittedly not as polished as the latter).

Could state anything that you want in this simple MP3 player that Dragon Player doesn't do?

The cool thing is, that you can write your own UI to qmmp, probably also one using KDE widgets

Example UI
http://code.google.com/p/qmmp/source/br ... ate=closed

A screenshot of the example UI
http://qmmp.ylsoftware.com/images/qmmp_testui_full.png

I'll soon open a separate Idea topic about this, as imho Dragon as a "simple KDE4 audio player" is *way* to simple :D
A KDE UI (or "front-end") to Qmmp would be a way better simple audio player
