I'm not sure what algorithm is used to pack the set of miniatures into the screen but it currently doesn't seem to preserve the relative size of the different windows. This can mean that a knote ends up being larger (in the present windows view) than an application (eg kmail) that was running full-screen or maximised.
It may not be neccesary to preserve relative size in absolute terms but at least the size order should be preserved (the biggest open window should still be the biggest icon; the smallest window the smallest icon etc) IMHO, preserving the relative size order would make the present windows effect more usable.

If using the default "natural" layout algorithm you can preserve window sizes by disabling the "fill gaps" setting in the present windows configuration dialog (Accessible through system settings -> desktop -> all effects -> present windows).
