When I set up a new KDE install I find myself spending a lot of time setting up keyboard shortcuts in different applications and when I install new applications I find myself reaching for the wrong shortcuts.
What I would like to see is an extension of the KDE shortcuts framework to allow the user to set for example a global shortcut "ctrl /" with the description "filter bar" then in the shortcut settings for each application that has a filter bar, it is possible rather than separately defining the shortcut to select "use shared keyboard shotcut" - "filter bar (ctrl /)" Then if the user wishes to change the shortcut at some other time, they simply change the global setting and all applications which choose to use this setting Most of the use of this would depend on a good default setup so applications used the shared shortcuts for common actions. The framework could however be quite general and allow the user to define new shared keyboard shortcuts with new descriptions that would become available in all applications. To prevent this feature from being too intrusive in the implementation it might be necessary to only apply changes made to the shared shortcuts from outside an application (ie from the KCM) when the application is restarted but this is not a big issue. This would lead to a greater opportunity for shortcut-conflicts to occur but I think the benefits outweigh this cost if it is dealt with sensibly. --EDIT-- ps - this reminds me of a partly related issue which I always find frustrating. I'd like KDE applications to synchronise their behaviour on shortcuts for switching the visibility of UI elements - for example "find and replace" some have one shortcut for show and one for hide, others just have a single shortcut to toggle. It means I simple can't use the same shortcuts for, in this example, find and replace in all applications because the behaviour of the shortcut is different. pps I prefer the toggle behaviour in general - less keys to remember

This is already present in the "standard keyboard shortcuts" system. If you want specific additional shortcuts made available here, please post ideas about them.

I remember this now... ah and it didn't seem to do what I wanted so I ignored it... but it does.
Thanks. I'd certainly like a shared filter-bar shortcut. Given that it is easy to overlook it might be nice to have an button to edit the shared "default" short-cut from inside the application sort-cut dialogue with an appropriate "this will effect all applications using this default short-cut" warning.
