It would be nice if there were possible to have animated wallpapers such as Windows Dreamscene.
We can imagine different options : - KDE equivalent for Dreamscene, in a - Support of videos (such as mpeg, wmv, ...) - Support of animated pictures (such as apng, animated GIF, ...) The selection of these dreamscenes could be done from the Desktop Configuration panel (Type : {Color / Picture / Slideshow / Dreamscene / Video) The button "Obtain new wallpapers" allows to download compatible animated pictures, dreamscene or videos. Support of wmv videos should allow to use easily dreamscenes form http://www.dreamscene.org website. |

KDE already does support animated/interactive backgrounds, including slideshow (weather - selects image depending on current weather conditions), virus (slowly disfigures your background), Mandelbrot explorer (I believe), Marble map view.
There have already been ideas submitted for video and animated image as background; I'm not sure how far those have gotten, but a quick search here will reveal their status.

Having a video background is a requirement for the plasma media center. I assume that once that is running it could be made available as a standard plasma wallpaper as well.
Downloading scripted wallpapers is already possible through the plasma widget download interface. Currently only wallpaper clock and day/night wallpaper downloads are available, though. So all that is really needed is people to write more wallpapers.

There is one available on kde-look, http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/An ... ent=112105. It is, however, in my opinion far too slow to use. Nice looking sure, but the rest of the system becomes snail-paced instead.

This is one of the big issues the developer of plasma media center has run into, but I think it will be solved eventually. If it is, this solution can also probably be used for other animated wallpapers. The primary problem, as I understand it, is animating under transparent widgets, which is really inefficient. Window requires widgets to be opaque, so it does not have to deal with this issue.

Also, and this is a guess, it would make it far harder to anticipate which part(s) of the screen would need to be redrawn at any given instant so the plugin may have to redraw the entire screen rather than just those parts that have changed. Of course, that would apply to Windows as well but they seem to have solved it in some way (some sort of cache I would guess) so it should be possible.
