Tablet/Mobile KDE

Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:12 am
There is a lack of proper Linux on tablets since only Android represents Linux in this market. A great tablet OS does exist, Meego. I can see many tablet and Mobile Linux based and open sourced OS coming, but there is no Linux based graphical user interface that is ready to work on these devices. Its a bunch of half good, half annoying self developments by these companies, with no alternatives.

KDE should develop a lightweight QT desktop that can be scaled between tablet format and mobile format. It should be ported to Android and Meego in particular, as these platforms will have good penetration, and an alternative to Android should be encouraged as well.

A Mobile/Tablet GUI in general should be created so that any future Linux project aimed at Tablets could use this and not face the great obstacle of having to create a GUI in addition when they port their Linux distro or make a Linux distro for these format.

I really like KDE 4, but I have to say, it is in no way appropriate for Tablets/Mobiles.

Have a look at Hildron GUI for Maemo, which is brilliant and would work fine for tablet/mobile and also draw some inspiration from Gnome 3, as such an inteface could also work great. A QT framework on Mobiles and tablets would not be difficult to implement. All apps would only need lightweight graphical presentation for the formats and some minor tweaking.

We just need a GUI for tablets/Mobiles. KDE is great, let us have it and help Linux penetrate tablets and Mobiles...

I just dont know why KDE has not already done this.

Sorry but are you reading kde news?
Many kde people already work on such a project. It's called plasma active
Look e.g.here if you want to see a preview. You will also find many other previews to plasma active on youtube. Or look to developer blogs (e.g Arons, Marcos and others)
