It was my idea to embed it into the containment-class, but this would still not allow sub-containments. It would maybe be useful to align the hole desktop (like gnome-shell), but for really individual alignment you need sub-containments. Sub-containments are allowed, but all the stuff like adding widgets is controled from outside and it is very hard to add such features with the current API to sub-containments.

yea, saying that containments in containments are not supported i meant that the sub-containment can't behave like that, but it behaves like a normal applet. there were well defined design choices behind that.
maybe you should ask aseigo if you want to know more |

Both "snap to grid" and "snap to other plasmoids" has been requested on bugzilla:

Hey, I revisited this thread some hours ago and then I noticed that there are a lot of updates in SVN. Luck. I'll check it.

As of minutes ago, the final bits for a "grouping desktop" were committed to KDE SVN. It's not on by default, but an addon (it's in kdeplasma-addon).
It is scheduled to appear in the 4.6 release.

Actually it still needs some bugfixes, especially the grid group, but the feature set it's here.

So if I got this right, giucam's Grouping Desktop will be part of KDE 4.6?

Yes, it is. I have grouping desktop set for my desktop type right now.
