Maybe a KIO-Slave would be enough.

I don't think KDE-team has the time to create an app for every website even if DropBox is useful

We already have the pastebin applet, could it be given a dropbox backend?

Ditto on creating a Dropbox KIOSlave.

Well, there are a number of such services. Why Dropbox and not Amazon S3? I think a plasmoid with multiple backends (similar to the pastebin applet) would be best.

+1 to the plasmoid. Still wandering on the file manager integration/KIOslave... I think the plasmoid would be enough for me personally.

Though, I wouldn't think this is something that should be handled by the KDE team, just as it isn't handled by the Gnome team. If the KDE team want to do it, I'm not stopping them.

Of course, it could also be a plasmoid. It would be nice to have the dropbox menus in dolphin and/or konqueror though.

(and the special icons and stuff)

Like this: (nautilus screenshot)

Correct me if wrong, but if this were a plasmoid, you'd not be able to access files through Save/Open dialogs?

Being able to do this (and have a Dropbox account listed as a "Places" in the Save/Open dialogs would be much more useful than just a plasmoid that needs to be on the panel or desktop.

Definitely, yes. The best would be to have both of course! :-)

But I'd be happy already if at least dropbox was integrated in dolphin...

I think the people suggesting a plasmoid or KIO-slave for dropbox (or even calls it a website) don't really know the main idea behind it.
Dropbox is designed to be used as just a normal folder on your computer, while a daemon backend will do the dirty work of syncing this folder after every file change. It already has a good systray client available, what it lacks is the filemanager integration (ie. dolpin part).

And stoked, adding your dropbox to places is no different than with any other folder, all you do is drag it there and voila!

Only adding my dropbox to places won't give me features such as "copy public link" right in dolphin or the special dropbox icons so it's not enough. We're asking for more than just the ability to drag'n'drop here. See this post over at the dropbox forums:

The daemon may work, however the key features of what make Dropbox so useful is the desktop environment integration. E.g. the "Copy public link..." in the public folder, or the ability to copy the URL for a photo gallery without having to visit the web interface.

So no, what you say isn't actually true, you *can't* use Dropbox in KDE without a KDE client - since there's no actual support for most of the stuff that makes Dropbox "Dropbox". Once the Dropboxers support Dolphin / Konqueror integration, then it'll work in KDE, until then, no. It doesn't.

From http://forums.getdropbox.com/topic.php? ... replies=20

See, I don't really care if it's a plasmoid, a qt client or - probably the best option - real dropbox support in dolphin/konqueror. I also don't care how this is done, a KIO-slave or whatever. ANYTHING would be better than what dropbox users on KDE have now...

(we're forced to use nautilus or the web interface) :undecided:

I am dropbox user but I'm not really familiar with the filemanager integration as I've never seen it ;) (and also don't really need it). But wouldn't this just be a matter of creating the appropriate service menus..?

sorry if my remark doesn't make sense :)

There are already quite some options for a ServiceMenu (check /usr/share/kde4/service/ServiceMenus). I.e. for my folders under svn, there is an Subversion submenu. I think if servicemenus are available to detect the dropbox folders, it's almost enough :)

I think it is pretty much dead. Or never started even, it seems. Wouldn't make sense making a kpart for dropbox anyways, all that's needed is a Dolphin/Konq plugin.
