I think the super key should also allow to open the Alt+F1 tasks ie to open the kickoff menu. The two key combination is difficult and there is no use of super key. i think super key can be used in that way.

Currently super key is used as a modifier key (like alt, ctrl and shift). KWin and compiz are just two examples that use it for shortcuts.

This used to be a configurable option in the old days.

a lot of people are used to it from windows... so imho it there should be an option to cofigure it to behave this way.

Even on Windows Super is a modifier key (Super+M and Super +L are some examples).
Super opening kickoff would be a smart way to do a frequent action.

I'm voting for it as I sometimes use the Meta and wonder why nothing has happened. I use it in Windows and now in Ubuntu's Unity. Gnome Shell uses it as well I think.

I understand why it isn't currently possible to implement but at least I can register my wish here.

When I used gnome-shell, I found it so convenient to bring up my programs using just the meta key. So I'm voting + for this idea!

I would love to have super key usable alone as a "generic" assignable shortcut key. Personally I would choose to use it to select toggling of "dashboard widgets" with independent widget set enabled, rather then for getting the menu.

Maybe the solution is to implement super key as shortcut if it was combined with other keys. If it was pushed alone, it will launch the menu. In Windows it was possible, hopefully in KDE also.

The meta key is a modifier and by this not allowed to trigger shortcuts itself to prevent clashes.

What you can do is to simply change the keysym of the keycode

NOTICE: YOU WILL LOOSE THE META KEY - so you might want to map it somewhere else.

Run "xev | grep keycode", press the meta key and watch the output (the code is likely 115)

then add an entry to your xmodmap configuration (if you don't have one, just "kwrite ~/.Xmodmap")

keycode 115 = F13
---- /end snip ----

"xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap" will change the keysym to F13 (not present on most keyboards and you can use it like any regular key.

If your distro does (probably) not invoke ~/.Xmodmap by default, add a short script to ~/.kde/share/autostart/

xmodmap.sh:

xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap
---- / end snip --------

and make it executable "chmod +x ~/.kde/share/autostart/xmodmap.sh"

This is true... but silly. QT is open source and open governnce now. KDE is arguably it's largest user. This idea clearly has traction with users. I'd say it would be highly valuable if someone from the relevant part of KDE would talk with or send a patch for QT so we can get this fixed once and for all. No, I don't know enough to do it myself, but the point of the brainstorm section is to find out what the users want most, right?
