[Dolphin] "Open All" option in the right-click menu when selecting multiple files
Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:59 pm
Normally when you right-click on a file you are given the option to "open with", but no option to open that file with the default program for that file time. This is not a problem normally, because you can just left click on the file to open it. But when you have multiple files selected, there is no way to easily open them all. You have to go to the "open with" and navigate to the program you want. I think that when there are multiple files selected the right-click menu should have, at the very top, an "open all" (or even just "open") item that when clicked opens the files in the default program.
It becomes a bit more complicated when the collection of files you selected includes files with different default programs. In this case I think Dolphin should partition them by file type, opening each type of file as a group in the correct program for that particular file type.

If you use Konqueror, you can select multiple files, right click and select "Open in New Window" and ... they open in new windows with their respective default applications!

I use Dolphin 1.2.1 (KDE 4.2.2) and I can select many files and right click and get an "open with..." on the context menu. If all files are of the same type the context menu shows that types choices. It wont work if I select filetypes that normaly opens in different programs. I get the choice to open all files with the same program, which isn't very useful.
Do I missunderstand you or is this essentially what you search for? |

Is that in a sub-menu? It is in trunk. The idea is twofold. First, to be able to access it without opening a sub-menu. Second, to automatically open all files in the os-assigned program, even if they are of different types.

Here's the behaviour I see: CASE 1: When marking more than one file and pressing enter: The same result as clicking each file but really really fast. By that I mean the default application for that type starts. Example two jpgs and a mp3 is selected. XMMS starts and two instances of gwenview. CASE 2: When marking more than one file with the same default application and right clicking on them: The "open with" menu shows the default application(s) for these types, and if I click it I get the same result as above. Example one mp3 and one ogg is selected. XMMS is in the list. CASE 3: When marking more than one file with different default applications and right clicking on them: The "open with" menu is not there, just the "open with" menu-item. If I click it, it will open up the "open with" dialog letting me choose an application to open all the selected files in (which isn't very useful). The only behaviour I do not see fit is case 3. In that case there is no sense in show the "open with" menu item at all. |

My idea is not for an "open with" menu, it is for a single "open" entry in the normal right-click menu. The "open" entry does not go in a sub-menu, it goes right at the top of the right-click menu. When you click it, it just opens the files, it does not open a second menu that you then have to click something in. I don't want to have to navigate to a sub-menu just to open the files with the default application, it takes too long for what should be a very simple task. It should be the entry right next to your mouse when you do a right-click, and clicking it should do the action immediately without having to navigate any additional menus.

Whoops: In case 2 there is no menu, just a menu entry (menu item or whatever). Have a look at this screenshot (case 2). Am I getting close? :-P |

Weird, this is not the case in KDE 4 trunk.
