I came across a mention of this in another topic, but it seems to merit its own suggestion: the calendar that shows up when you click on the clock applet should have the option to show events and to-do's for the selected day. I'm thinking of something like what Gnome currently give you if you use Evolution for calendaring. With the migration of the calendaring components of KDEPIM to Akonadi in the next two releases, this should be doable in a relatively application-independent way.

This is implemented for 4.5, but won't be functional until kdepim is switched to akonadi probably for 4.5.1
