In order to keep the storage devices access faster, I propose a submenu (cashew-style) which could be shown just through the mouse cursor over "n actions" text.

This is the mockup for my idea (melted with another idea about free space on devices):

This is a really good idea: now we can get rid of the annoying, obtrusive pop-up once and for all! :p

This idea has my vote.

i think it can be made a bit nicer though

make the entire main menu wider

make thwe drive fill meters to the side of the drive name and icon (all in one line)

for each action choose an icon that clearly reperesemts it

cd with RW on it + eraser
play button
open folder
copy icon
eject icon
electrical plug and hard drive (mount the drive without other action)
settings icon (configure stuff like automounting etc)

display 1 - 2 icons (the most used ones like eject) for all items all the time

display the others instead of the fill meter when mouse pointer is over it

to each icon there is tooltip that says what it does

the user can add or remove actions in the plasmoid settings

Good idea. I dislike the current behavior with the actions pop-up a lot. I would still suggest to have an option to disable the actions and always open the device in dolphin. That's what I use most.

+1 if you can make it remember preferences for media (per type, eg. for all cd-rom and per specific medium, for this one specific cd-rom) too...

but what I really would like is to have the device icons on the desktop again....

I use the lancelot part for that. You can also put the new device notifier directly on the desktop, in which case it is a list instead of a single icon.

some of the features that you are requesting are already available with the DeviceManager plasmoid.
Check it out on:
http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.ph ... ent=106051 ... ent=106051

It has automount, free space indicator, actions sub menu and more...

From the description it wasn\'t immediately obvious that the point of this was to replace an annoying pop-up window with a more consistent interface. But now that I see what you\'re getting at, I\'ve changed my vote from a down to an up.

I\'d say this thing needs to be the default in KDE 4.4!!!!!!! I wonder if the plasma devs are aware of its existence?

I don't do sigs.

It is a great plasmoid indeed, but it seems to have some (UFT) encoding problems at the moment. But nothing that few devs can\'t fix :)

There should also be an option "mount only".
