I propose a facial recognition library to be created to not only recognize that there is a face but also measure biometric measurements which it can associate with a given person.
Tagging can be a pain and repetitive so automation is the perfect task for computers. This IMHO this will be a big step forward in the KDE Social Semantic Desktop. This library can be used with Nepomuk / Digikam to automatically tag pictures with the people they are associated. it can also be used with KDM / Kwallet as a means of authentication if the computer has a webcam.

Making such a library is no small task! ... And if there already is one I doubt it's very accurate. And it probably use *a lot* of resources (memory and cpu cycles).
So, while it's a cool futuristic idea, I fear that the future hasn't come just jet. :clock: |

not futuristic if Apple http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/ and Picasa http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00873.html have it and no I have no Idea how well they work.

As for using the computer's webcam for identification, that I think is a bad idea: to access your computer, somebody would only have to find your picture on Facebook (or snap one with a small camera), print it out and show it to your webcam. Or even just put the camera's display next to the webcam to avoid the printing step
Even the fingerprint-based authentication has been criticized for being too easy to break by getting fingerprints from your computer with sticky tape or something.. |

This idea sounds so good
Enabling this feature across system would be something that KDE could be proud of. |

it already exists, there is even a kdm module for it:

There's a demo to be released of creating 3d models using a webcam (the site of the guy who researches it: http://mi.eng.cam.ac.uk/~qp202/)
Might be the solution for identity theft by presenting pictures. And it's pretty cool to have a 3d model of your face on the computer. Might make a good basis for avatars on videochats. Lastly, Lenovo S12 enables login and file encryption using the user's face (I think the software is called veriface) |

Right. There's already a PAM face authentication module.
And I'm working on integrating Face Recognition in digiKam right now, as my GSoC project, to automatically tag photos. It is experimental science and consumes a lot of CPU cycles. Which is why I feel it might not be too practical to have this in gwenview, which is an image viewer - unnecessary slow-down. And yes, in the future, gwenview will be able to retrieve tags written by digiKam, of course, as we are planning to store them in the image metadata. The library that I and my mentor made is called "libface" and is located here: http://libface.sourceforge.net/ It implements Face Detection AND Recognition. As of now, the face detection's speed and accuracy is comparable to that of iPhoto and Picasa. Face recognition was recently implemented, and it works okay, with a lot of work going on for it.

Talks about digikam integration in trunk at the moment. Someone else linked to kdm integration. (not sure how much of that is shared as a library, I imagine they're both using OpenCV underneath though) Can this be marked as in-progress or possibly even "complete" please? |
