Hi!
There are yet some possibilities to change preferences inside the system-settings and from another application. But for some preferences there are not yet these possibilites. For example you can't manage virtual desktops or choose Plasma-themes from system-settings. It would be great to embedd nearly all preferences there. But such a large amount of options also needs some reorganization. The current categories are really unclear. The screensaver should be covered by "appearance". The second tab is completely unordered. There should be categories like "data-services", "system-services", "other hardware". Keyboard and Mouse settings should be bundled. For general keyboard-preferences and shortcuts, input action and keyboard-layout there are three different places. For mouse-gestures and general preferences there are also two different places. It's not bad to have double entries. It's good to list keyboard-layout at localization-preferences and keyboard-preferences. The user has a random expectation, where to find them. The cursor-theme also belongs to the appearance. The Plasma details and the Plasma preferences accessable from desktop should share a category. All the filetype-configurations belong together. When you click on "workspace" there should be also the possibility to configure virtual desktops. The full Konqueror configuration could be embedded instead of only few parts. Accessing other KDE-applications would be also great. Applications like KPackageKit could be integrated directly. There could be a section with links to other programs like Yast2, Sax2, gparted... On the other hand the other applications should integrate more settings. For example Konqueror should be able to configure mouse-gestures. Plasma should have the ability to open the detail-theme-settings. Do you think such reorganization would be good? The User |

This is actually two seperate bugs:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=157587 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171058 I hope to implement seperate applications in System Settings for 4.4. Hopefully I will be able to get the Usability people to help me decide on new names / arrangement.

The problem is not the way settings is organized but why they are organized in this way.
Now settings are mostly organized by WHO does the job (like Keyboard and Mouse are separate). But they must be organized thinking of WHY, WHAT IS THE PURPOSE of this group of settings. And Keyboard, Mouse,Touch screen etc should go under Input devices. Also Desktop effects are under desktop, not under appearance. They definitely controls the way windows acts and looks Also2 "Display" -> Gamma controls the Look&Feel of the output |

So there should be some preferences available under multiple categories.
It's often hard to find specific setting, when you don't remember any more. When you are a newbie and you want to have another screensaver and another cursor theme, of course you would look at appearance. |
