Currently it appears the only way to change the desktop background is from the plasma desktop settings interface.
I'd prefer to be able to set the wallpaper when browsing my images in dolphin or gwenview. This could be implemented by being able to drag and drop an image onto the desktop. Currently if I do this I get a menu which allows me to create an icon for the file or a picture frame. A new "Set as background" option would be a great idea to add to this list, and is something I belive many people would be surprised isn't there already. |

If you use the Folder View desktop, this is already possible (in KDE 4.3).

Thanks, I've changed to the Folder View as I wasn't using any plasma widgets on the desktop. For most people I think it would be very helpful to have this option with the "Desktop" type desktop too.

When you drag and drop things in Dolphin, you get a menu with actions, which the developer of Ark modified to allow programs to add additional actions to the menu. Also, one of this year's GSOC project was a pluggable right-click menu for the plasma desktop containment. I think combining these might provide the best solution. So for images, if you drop an image on the desktop you get a menu with different actions you can take, for instance "add as icon", "add as picture viewer", "make background", "add to background list", and "add to slideshow background"
