I found really difficult using the actual ( kde 4.4 ) wallpaper selector because if you have just the official wallpaper scrolling down don't help you find what you like easily. I think that it would be good to create in the wallpaper selector something like group view il dolphin. Here is the screenshot. Wallpaper can be organized for names, or better for what they contain:
example: I shot a photo to a lake, it's an environment wallpaper, so i can call the image: "env_the lake that i like so much near my home.png". The wallpaper selector read the filename and recognize that is an envinroment wallpaer ( env_ ), the env_ can be dropped and the rest of the name ( the lake that i like so much near my home ) showned in the wallpaper selector list. The wallpaper so can be showned in the appropriate category. The image : http://img714.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... lpaper.png |

Also if search facility is available it would be excellent.
I have hundreds of wallpapers and it becomes very difficult to scroll and select the desired wallpaper. |

While nothing can do it automatically for you, if you display the wallpaper directory in dolphin, with the Information panel open, you can add tags to each one. This is the sort of task that nepomuk and strigi are designed for.
I've not been using tags, but I just did a quick experiment. I ctrl-clicked a selection of photos in a directory and added the tag 'Family'. I then entered 'Family' into the search bar over that directory, it offered to search for the tag, which I accepted, then I had to say where I wanted it to search (in this case, 'From here'. All the family-tagged images showed, and I was offered the possibility of saving the search. Getting it set up at first will be a bit tedious, but maintaining it shouldn't be bad - it's just a matter of adding tags to new wallpapers then.

I have to say, this would make a lot of sense, as long as you added a button to change the sorting. Most of my pictures come out as a string of 10 numbers or so, so not too helpful with your method But sorting by size, or maybe even color too (sort of like how on Google you can choose what the main color is in advanced image search) would be very nice. Also a search bar.

Yeah, please show wallpapers as grid view. That list view is really annoying.
As selecting a wallpaper is all about the image, i'd also prefer the thumbnails to be as large as possible (250px wide?) with not much white space / fonts between them.
I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

This is how it works in 4.5.

I know this is an old thread, but I think the wallpaper selection should allow you to double-click the image to apply, instead of having to select and apply. With respect to how to encode the images regarding filenames; I think it would be a better idea to use the EXIF Keywords field to describe it. Though, Gwenview currently does not allow editing of those fields, GIMP does.
