A student of mine is trying to create an account, they registered and clicked the link in their confirmation email, and now when they try to log in they can't enter their username:

Please have them mail sysadmin@kde.org from the email address they tried to register using.
They will need to ensure they include a reasonably complete first and last name. This issue usually occurs when people put initials.
