Country icons

Sun Dec 28, 2008 8:05 pm
Hi,

I'm wondering how the country icons for users are derived?
I'm in Sweden but my icon says Abu Dhabi.

The country icons are derived from the Country you set in User CP ( User CP > Edit Profile, Additional information section ). Abu Dhabi is currently the default country.

I think this is very confusing and gives a wrong picture. The same problem you have with the OS: everybody that does not set his distro seems to be an Arch Linux user.
I propose to change these things to defaults that make more sense (no country/OS or not display these items if the user did not set those in his profile)

@codeclump: The reason behind users getting these by default is because they are the top item in the possible selections.

I will investigate possible fixes for both.

That is strange. I remember adding the default option as . Wonder why the is truncated. Maybe a static test such as "--select--" with a no-display exception ofcourse would do the trick.

Will the plugin(s) need updating to change the no display value?

If a static text is used, yes. I'll commit it tomorrow as soon as I'm free from college.

Thanks LinuxIsInnovation. once you have committed the changes, I will upload them as soon as I can and update the plugin settings, so new users do not have this problem.

I believe existing users will still have the old values for their Country + Operating System though.

Well, I believe that a find and replace though the DB for changing "Arch" to "--select--" will bother those who actually use Arch :) So true, they will still face the problem.

Few ideas and fixes:
There is Yugoslavia under the countries even though the country dosen't exist any more...
More so, it has the same flag as Serbia. Serbia has now new state flag but the national flag is the same (I checked on Wikipedia). But I leave the decision to change the flag to users from Serbia.
Then about the Yugoslavia flag: As I said it shows the flag of Federal republic of Yugoslavia and the state of Serbia and Montenegro.
But I was (a bit of Yugo-nostalgic here) was expecting to see the the flag of SFRY.
But it will be OK if it's just removed.
On the other hand there are so many flags of countries that are not independent or even states (like Antarctica) so I would add flag of EU and maybe a little world map (or UN flag) for all that are not that patriotic.

For all those who aren't patriotic can choose *not* to show a flag at all ;)
Rest, I'll look into. Thanks for pointing out.
