Now you can select your operating system from a selection menu (list) in your User-CP.
We strongly recommend that you set your Operating System there, doing which, your OS will show up on your profile next to your posts (for example, see mine). That helps other members to know which distro you are using and can hence, provide you with a solution more quickly.

If you use linux and you don't know your distro, type the following command at the terminal (CLI) of your OS:

lsb_release -a

You can set it at User-CP -> Edit Profile (under "Additional Information") or follow this link to reach the User-CP profile page: usercp.php?action=profile

If you are posting a thread where you need assistance with an OS that is now shown up on the profile box, you can mention it separately. Though you raised a good point
I'll see if we find a better alternative.

EDIT: You can add it to your sig if you want. More than one entry will clutter the profile box.

You don't actually need that if you know your distro
But that's strange anyway, it even works on a 7 year old redhat server at my college :-S

Strange... for me work without any problem. Type lsb and hit TAB. and do not forget the -a.

I suppose some package is not installed. I have installed from the Live-CD, which only contains a minimal installation.

It would help you to remember too.

It might be interesting to see statistics of some sort that would show which distro is the most popular with KDE users...
(If my observing is correct it would be SuSE or Kubuntu)

Yes! Statistics are cool

Since not many have selected their OS, it can be a largely inaccurate count. Though I'll see if I can come up with something that adds to the forum stats or something. Till then, maybe use a poll instead?
