Hi our beloved forum staff,
When a user creates an account here, it automatically has the signature and webpage filled with generic values - "username, proud to be a member of KDE forums since ..." for the signature, and forum.kde.org for webpage. While the former one is just an annoyance (at least is for me), the second produces a usability glitch. The WWW button's existence should be an indicator of whether a user has set the webpage. So, my proposal is to set the webpage to empty for existing users (for those that have forum.kde.org) and to remove it from being the default. (and similar for signature)

A default text in the sig, homepage and personal pad is used as to avoid (to some extent) spam accounts to use bad links in signature and as webpage. That can be observed as the most common behavior of spam bots.
Now after implementing the latest Captcha, there has been almost a 100% cut on spam accounts, maybe the admins have any better ideas regarding these default values. Plus, even if the default values are changed, I'm not sure that it'll apply for already registered users (maybe only for new account registrations). Agreeing with your point, I will try to find out a better workaround and propose that to our admins |

Signatures of existing accounts is fine how it is, the website link though should definitely be removed and can be done so by just doing a database search/replace.

Thanks to neverendingo (who else can do it anyway!! ) the homepage is gone. It is not a good idea to replace them using db tools, as if something goes wrong, the whole forum goes down. It is too much of a risk.
Also afaik, new registrations will not have the default sig either (not sure though). |
