Is there any chance to alternatively base the registration on OpenID? We are currently using it on techbase an userbase (userbase excusively as a pilot) as well as the kdedevelopers.org blogging platform. Would be nice to see forum.kde.org in the list of OpenID supported KDE sites.

We already thought of that. Actually there is a plugin for mybb to support only openid logins. But it isn't ported to the new version till now. Maybe we should take a look at it and modify it to fit our needs.
So in short: it could be possible, but needs further research.

We're currently working on a plugin to support OpenID logins. This plugin will complement the current login system, so even if you'd rather use OpenID, you can register now, and add your OpenID to your account later.
