Tag selection

Sun Aug 16, 2009 1:59 pm
Hello,
the tagging system is a very good idea and I like it. But if you want to add a new tag to a topic and you know that a tag which matches already exists you have to remember it character for character. So I suggest to add a tag completion.
e. g.
You want to add the tag "konqueror".
You type "konq" and a menu suggests you "konqueror" and "konquest" (if the tags are existing already). It should work even if there are tags already.
So if the tag-input-field looks like this
"webbrowsing, konq"
the menu should appear, too.

Cheers, Jan

That was discussed before when we shipped the tagging system. But since there can be a _lot_ of tags, generating the list of tags during typing can be expensive on both server and client side. We'll see if we find a better tag 'suggestion' / autocomplete method.

OK, that's logical.
Thanks

I thought of a similar idea to avoid double tags with the same meaning:
Let's imagine that there are two tags called "transparency" and "lucency" (they mean the same, as far as I know). The users could 'connect' these tags to show that they mean the same. So if you search for "transparency" you get all articles with the tags "transparency" and "lucency" if they are connected.
