The brainstorm concept

Sun Sep 06, 2009 9:12 am
The following is just my own opinion. Sorry for possible misunderstandings - English is not my native language.

I am a regular user of KDE (Kubuntu) who would regularly like to contribute to KDE with their ideas.
As far as understand, main advantage of the brainstorm (KDE brainstorm) is to give possibility to non-programmers and non-designers to contribute with ideas from users' point of view.

Most of my ideas refer to usability of specific packages. The same refers (IMHO) to most of others ideas.

I see a conceptual flaw in current implementation of the brainstorm on KDE forums:
Brainstorm is good only for general ideas - because there is no guaranty that developer(s) of the related application is reading the brainstorm (even if the developer would like to - it's difficult, as there is no subscribe per package feature (?)).

I posted several ideas:
brainstorm.php#idea41804
brainstorm.php#idea61852
brainstorm.php#idea43859

But what's the reason of posting these (or similar) ideas if the developer who can actually implement or reject the idea is not aware of it?
That's why in all cases above i contacted developer my mail, blog or posted a wish on bugs.kde.org.
So that's the flaw (imho) of the KDE brainstorm.

The solution - integrate brainstorm with bug.kde.org.

Otherwise people are just talking and talking...

Basically you are right.
But the brainstorm area is there to discuss with other users if it is a good idea BEFORE it gets to the developers (like finally submitting it to b.k.o).
So you see if your idea is not only something YOU would like to have, but to have some backup from other users.

Then, there is a missing link. Is someone taking care that the idea gets to the developer?

I think in the guidelines there should be described the goal of the brainstorm - and all the chain of contributing to KDE.

Mamonetti, 2009 September 6

I agree, within time people only see how much meaningless are their comments, with no reference to true projects. Any dev reading? Any dev interested? Who knows..

So.. many times people don’t want to continue losing time with useless discussions.

@Mamonetti – We are working in trying to get developers more involved, but bear in mind that they follow completely different workflows than users. Also, Brainstorm needs to get more exposure, as well.

All stuff that we’ve been working on. It’ll take time, anyway.
