My idea is similar to idea 41951 (brainstorm.php#idea41951), but with a different presentation method.

In windows per-application volume settings are controlled from the volume settings. The KDE equivalent would be putting these settings in kMix like idea 41951. I would however prefer to have per-application volume controls close by (as I often mute single applications), and I think the title bar of an application would be the ideal place to put it.

Additionaly it would be nice if this button would automatically hide/be grayed out if an application doesn't use sound.

Advantages:
+ Volume controls right where you need them
+ It's easy to see when an application is muted. In windows I often forget I muted my web browser and afterwards I'm wondering why there's no sound
+ Not much clutter if the auto-hide of the button is implemented

Disadvantages:
- Yet another button on the title bar, but it could be hidden by users who don't want it (much like the "show on all desktops" button which I find less useful than this)

I'm not sure, I think I prefer the Ubuntu approach of putting all application-specific volume settings in the main system tray audio utility (in KDE's case Kmix). This way it's a bit more out the way, as most of the time how much sound an application makes doesn't concern me.

It could be implemented in kmix as well. In this case it could be made into an an optional button which can be hidden. This wouldn't be a problem for users who don't need this function while it could be used for those who do want it...

In a way that would be similar to the "show on all desktops" which isn't used by all users either.

The auto-hide function would also make it less 'in the way' of things...

This idea is really great. It could be an optional setting, not the default.

sounds absolutely great! Why not have it both in kmix and per application?

Yaaay.
I remember a good'ol time when I proposed something like that in the Ubuntu brainstorm (except the volume mixer was in the taskbar), but this one is much better. 'love that !

these options should be in kmix in a separate tab... but this button you suggest would be great to have (optional) like the "keep above" button i wouldnt wanna miss...

Nice idea!
Since now a lot of distros are using pulseaudio, that let you set the audio volume per-application, this feature could let us tune per-app audio volume in a really easy way.
Is it useful? I think yes: for example, you were listening to music on amarok, while you received a call on skype or opening a video chat, so you want to change the music volume during the call...

It's an okay idea. I don't think it would do much good. It seems like one of those frivolous things, that once implemented could be boasted about, but don't have much practical application.

NOTE : I still think it should be implemented.

@gerlos : Couldn't you just decrease the music volume directly from Amarok. It does have a rather long bar for that.

This is very intresting suggestion.

I have PulseAudio enabled but I do not use the function to mix different apps. Even Windows Vista and Windows 7 use the one global place to control audio. But I do not never use that because it is so hard to get the mixer up and set the audio.

I like the "Mute" function on the toolbar. But the volume control could be handled from one place.

I have littlebit mixed feelings about this because the global place is better, but sometimes I do have a need to easy way control the per application sound level on system side.

The idea was rejected in bugs.kde.org.

Some more info about the rejection would be nice - seems like a great idea for me. I'd much prefer this to the Vista like configuration in a central mix (kmix) as it's setting the applications volume it seems right to put it on the application. I'd settle for having it optional via the "special window settings".

You can see the bug report here:

If you disagree with the decision feel free to discuss it there.
