A rather simple idea, as simple to realize (I hope):
When I boot or shutdown I see nice, informing, entertaining splashscreens. I feel welcome and it is nice. Unfortunately not, when I go to Suspend_to_Disk|RAM mode. Then I simply see a blinking cursor in the top left corner of a merely black and empty screen for some time and then (hopefully) the system turns itself off. That is not-informing, a bit ugly, lets me alone, instead of keeping contact with me. I would very much appreciate a splashscreen that shows e.g. in a simple progress-bar, how long the suspend process will take and that it is still underway and not stopped for some reason. Keep the user informed what happens in any state of the system! |

For suspend to disk I agree with you (and have voted this up for this reason) But for suspend to RAM should be fast (almost instant) so no splash screen should be used (just maybe a short fadeout or something).
More impotently when set to need password when returning from screen saver /suspend, it should not show the screen (even as a quick flash) as the user may have sensitive documents open. |

I like the idea but I don't think it is something for a desktop environment to implement.
It sounds as if this would be more applicable for a distribution to implement in usplash/splashy/plymouth. |

Correct, this is something that distributions need to handle. On my openSUSE system, I recieve a splash when suspending to disk.
