1/2 Calculation

  • Mac OS X's Spotlight allows on-the-fly calculation straight from Spotlight (try "5+2". But one cannot copy the result (it has to be manually entered)
  • KRunner allows almost the same thing. On the plus side, one can copy the result (press enter to have the output become the new input). On the down side, it is required to type "=" (the equal sign).
Proposal: to be able to make such calculations straight from Kickoff (or Lancelot, but I did not try this one yet)

So you are suggesting that we do calculations without having to type the '='?

1/2 Calculation

This is just a nice addition, but this is not fundamental.

What I ultimately want is a Google/Gmai-like "GUI CLI".

Consider these three paradigms:
- program-oriented interface. Traditionnal CLI ou Windows pre-95. You chose the program to launch.
- file-oriented interface. Traditionnal GUI. You click on a a file which is linked to a program.
- task-oriented interface. Modern GUI (Google/Gmail or launchers). You start your task, the computer guesses what you want to do. This is Do What I Mean, I know, but for a limited amount of topics, it works.

For instance, if the computer detects something that looks like a mathematical formula, it may guess one wants the result. Sure, it could go much farther, but this is a beginning.

Reposting from the original topic:

Kickoff's runners are intentionally limited to prevent crashes.

Lancelot already supports all runners. (runs outside of plasma process, so crashes are not problematic)
