[DUPLICATE] [WONTFIX] [Support] Remote connection from behind two firewalls
Wed Apr 22, 2009 2:20 pm
I have started helping friends and family to get Kubuntu loaded on their PC's. So far things are ok, but I will soon have to start running around to help them fix even small problems.
The best solution would be to have a remote session and just fix things without leaving my office. But none of us have control over our modem/router so we can not open ports to allow the use of that. Rdesktop and VNC works very well over the local network. When internet comes into play, things become a bit different. There are some tools out there that can handle a situation like this by using a "middle man" eg. server to make the connection. But they are all made for Windows. We need a system to allow us to help people via a remote connection. Either as an internet server that can help setting up the connection, or maybe do it the MS way - use Kopete and a jabber server to connect two computers the same way you can initiate a remote session through Messenger. One of the first questions I hear from someone if I suggest installing Kubuntu, is "How will I get help when I need it?" and if I could show that Kubuntu has a better help system than Windows and MacOSX, that would certainly mean a lot! "Just send me a message in Kopete, and I will fix it for you while you are watching ".
