Both karaoke and Sing-star are very popular in some cultures and after a few drinks even popular in the remaining cultures
It would be nice to have a sing-star plugin for Amarok. most of the functionality is already there (picking songs, lyrics lookup) all that would be needed is :- * Add bouncing ball /lyrics highlighter * suppress songs recorded vocals (either properly with MP3s with vocals missing or with equaliser suppressing the vocal range) * computer rating of your recorded performance. Depending on work involved it may be easier to have a totally separate program that uses exposed pieces of Amarok to provide the play-list and Lyrics function.

Yea I know it's a big plugin and I'm thinking more and more that it might be better as a seprate program that uses Amarok components. It would allow for less confusion also as amarok can get quite crowded already.

There is a program for this already called Performous (original called UltraStar). I would suggest that a lot of the code in this opensource game could be re-used. For the songs it uses just basic mp3 and a text file with the lyrics (with some timing information) which can be found on the web searching for ultraStar songs.
It would be easy enough to just display the lyrics in Amarok highlighting them in time with the music based on the timings in these Ultrastar text file. The more difficult analysis of users singing through a microphone can come later (if it proves popular) |

I'm not sure amarok is really the best place for this. A media center-type app like barang would probably be better.

I don't think this idea is a duplicate.
While this one asks for a plugin, Idea #86246 asks for a bultin Amarok feature. |
