It would be nice to have an easy to use backup tool integrated in Dolphin. A convenient way to achieve that with KDE would be to rely on rdiff-backup or rsync.
1. Creating the backup task: ---------------------------- A "Backup" button could be added to Dolphin, which would popup a dialog asking the backup frequency. Upon validation, this would register a rdiff-backup job in the current user's crontab. The rdiff-backup job would backup the directory shown in Dolphin into a specific location, that could be defined (as well as a few other options, I guess) in a SystemSettings > Backup Preferences tool. For instance /home/john/Documents/draft could be rdiff'ed to /home/john/Documents/draft/.rdiff-dolphin (the latter would of course be excluded from the rdiff-backup job). Alternatively, the destination could be on a removable media, a remote filesystem, or a ssh server (e.g. through sshfs). 2. Accessing backup files/directories: -------------------------------------- When Dolphin shows a directory for which a backup job has already been defined, a time line could be added below the menu bar, allowing users to travel in time, and see the different files appearing/disappearing/being modified. All in all, this is quite close to the integration of ZFS snapshots in Nautilus : http://blogs.sun.com/erwann/entry/zfs_o ... esktop_zfs. What do you think about that ?

I suggest you contribute your ideas to the original thread - it's too similar to have a separate idea of its own
