Hi! In KDE 3.*, Kile and KDVI work together very very well, because it is possible to jump from the tex code to the exact point at the dvi file and viceversa. Now in KDE 4, with Okular, these two features are gone! Honestly, everybody working in the academic world and using linux needs the forward/backward search features between Kile and Okular.
Or even better! Revive KDVI!

+1 I think Okular as a lot of advantages compared to Kdvi, apart from this reverse search ability.
What about two buttons to automatically arrange both (okular and kile) windows side by side or (my preference) one below the other? |

This is not actually an idea, Okular supports already the inverse search, and Kile has the features needed too.
What is currently missing (or better, needs improvements) is the way to activate the inverse search links. (Right now you need to be _very_ precise on points, and to click with Shift+LMB.)

Hello pinotree,
Great! This is what I waited for! But: In my okular 0.8.1, Shift+LMB opens only a small dialog to "add a bookmark". Where can I set / change the mouse shortcut? Second problem: How can I make okular "observe" the dvi-file such that each time I compile it new, okular jumps to the actual point in the dvi-file? At the moment, in my configuration, QuickBuild in kile works exactly once and compiling the latex file "from another line" in kile doesn't change the position in okular.

You need Okular 0.8.2 for proper DVI source anchors handling.

I have Kile and Okular (0.8.2) included in Ubuntu 9.04 distribution. I made the required configuration of both Kile (LaTeX : modern, Forward dvi : Okular) and Okular (Editor : Kile).
The forward dvi does not work : the dvi file opens in Okular, but not where I wanted to. The backwards search does not work : shift +LMB (which I could not find in Okular help pages, by the way) just produces NOTHING. I am very unhappy with that. |
