When I tried to resize the folder view widget, it was very strangely slow, and my disk had a good amount of work to do, which is obviously absurd, so, using lsof and strace, I discovered that plasma was repeatedly creating, writing to and then deleting a file named /var/tmp/kdecache-user/kpc/plasma_theme_default.lock.
I moved the directory kpc into a tmpfs partition and symlinked it back and everything went fine. There is surely a bug somewhere.

By the way, I'm using KDE 4.2.1.
