[Konsole] Copy and Paste like Putty

Sun Mar 22, 2009 4:43 pm
I think its been mentioned before a good few times but

To me the ultimate option to add to Konsole is to copy and paste like putty does.
spent a lot of time using putty and probably a lot of other people do as well.

I know putty is availible for linux but its not really very pretty...
either way Konsole could benifit from the feature.

Cheers

How does PuTTY do copy and paste then, and why is it better?

Hi David, thanks for your reply.

To copy double click on a word it automatically highlights and automatically copies the word into the clipboard then right click and select paste...

on Konsole to do the same you double click right click copy then right click and paste (not everyone has a middle button)..

It does not have to be default way but would be a delight to be able to apply to Konsole...

I don't see why Konsole shouldn't follow the system's standard way to copy/paste.

You can emulate a middle click my simultaneously clicking the left and right button (if this feature is enabled). If you want to paste the text with Ctrl-V, you can use Klipper and select the text you want to paste.

I have to disagree with this request since it breaks the usual functionality (middle click to paste) as implemented by the rest of the unix world.
Also as mentioned above, x.org provides a way to emulate the third button by interpreting left+right click as such. I think this comes as default, otherwise you can enable it by adding
Code: Select all
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
under your mouse's InputDevice section.

hellblade,

How can it break anything it is just a option that a user might require / want, the default will always be the default. KDE changes so many other settings from other environments so why such a negative reply?

I made a slight mistake when explaining the functionality
double left click to copy and right click to paste..

This is faster then two mouse buttons to paste (I don't know no other places this a require action) or even a middle button because fingers are always on the two buttons so less movement and thinking is required.

Windows cmd.exe also has the option called quick edit mode, I am not sure but I would expect mac to have the options someplace as well.

So why can't Konsole I am not asking it from other applications but if your sshing all over the place its nice to have the same tools available.

"rest of the unix world" thought KDE was trying to expand past purely unix worlds (with the whole efforts to install KDE on windows) I would use Konsole instead of Putty in Windows if it had this one very feature.

But there you go...

Regards
Darren

Actually I would much prefer Putty to implement the middle mouse button paste. I work at least 8 hours a day with Linux, and if I'm using Winblows and Putty I always find myself trying the middle click to paste. So this should be moved to the Putty bugtracker, if there is any ;)

Konsole already has this feature.

I think you are missing an underlieing point in most of these negative posts.

Konsole can do the quick copy and paste any Linux app can.

Use the left mouse button to select as you do in putty then use the middle mouse button to paste (use both left and right butons together if you don't have a middle button). The only difference is that putty uses right mouse button to paste instead of middle.

NOTE:- Selecting text copies to a different clipboard than ctl-C does. Use middle mouse button to paste from selection clipboard. use ctl-V to paste from regular clipboard.

Believe it or not, it's everywhere in X11, and even in the console if you have gpm. Anything you select in any application gets saved to a clipboard, and can be pasted anywhere using the middle mouse button. Anyone who uses Linux (or unix, rather) and does not know about the middle button paste is really missing out.

Thanks for the replies...

As highlighted this is a call for "new features" it might not be the most brainstorming amazing feature to some but it is "useful" to me and hopefully others.

I wonder how many people would set up and use firefox the same way as I do. There are two ways to use find in standard firefox both work, yet I prefer to use vi so have a pluggin that allows me to control firefox in the same / similar way to vi and find becomes so much nicer for me.

Konsole allows a bunch of configuration outside of what "os" is installed, you can change the font the colour the size, so why not the ability to change the way the clipboard works.

!
Andre - thanks for your post I was going to say go and ask the PUTTY devs for the feature you require but guess what
--- its already available (Selection -xterm right extends middle pastes) ---

The selection I use is "Compromise" (middle extends right pastes).

This is for KDE and to highlight it is not a bug but a user request for different feature(s).
!

Not everyone works the same way not everyone wants the same things. KDE is full of examples of doing things in different ways to suite different people and requirements so just saying we do it differently because other parts of Linux does things X Y Z way is like saying you must use the default KDE icons or colours and if you don't use everything the same your not worthy of using KDE / Linux.
