I am using panel on the right side of the screen since 1280x1024 monitors. Nowadays monitors tend to grow horizontaly (1680, 1920) but vertical resolution is still only 1050 or 1200 dots. So it makes even more sense to be able to put panel on the sides of the screen.
Just try to set panel to the right side od the screen and you will know what I am talking about. Icons tend to grow abnormaly. Only sytem tray sems to be acting normaly (probably because it is using only fixed small icon sizes anyway). by TheR |

NOTANIDEA. more of a bug report, though vertical panels are working pretty decently these days. (how do we mark these things as developers, btw?)

Well I am kind of satisfied now. I moved Quicklaunch to top of screen and made it autohide. The rest of the panel is behaving normal.

I am glad to here that someone is satisfied. I am not. 1) I removed kickoff below the calendar and an artifact remained - this gray line above analog clock. I can't remove it. 2) There is no way to manage the position of icons horizontally in this vertical layout of panel. For example see show dashboard and show desktop icons. It would be better to place them one next to the other horizontally. The same on the bottom I have kickoff icon, classical menu icon and switch off icon. The same, I wish I could place them one next to the other horizontally. This way I could have more space for activity bar and "quick launch". Look how small are icon in "quick launch". If I could place icons horizontally I would have larger icons in "quick launch". 3) It would be great if it was possible to develop some way to resize plasmoids, I mean to give custom, fixed size for example for "quick launch" and activity bar so that it won't interfere with other plasmoids. So that other plasmoids would not change their size. 4) Another issue - it didn't applied the plasma theme, the one that is applied to bottom edge panel. 5) One more issue - icons of applications minimized to tray don't appear in tray when it is on the left side of the screen. I think this idea is general and its status should be changed because it is still valid one way or the other. I found a similar, releted bugs: Bug 296399 - Panel - Digital Clock Overlaping the System Tray https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=296399 Bug 294220 - it is not possible to add groups to a grouping panel https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294220 Bug 302948 - impossible to put anything in order https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=302948 I recorded my desktop to show how disastrous it works now (or it rather doesn't work) http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=812513 |
