one of the greatest features of KDE's user interface experience is the wealth of little apps, applets and other gizmos to extend and customise it's functionality. rater than a clean break having to start from scratch, is there some way kde4 could make use of kde3 applets for kicker and whatever else is missing? perhaps some compatability layer or something?

(personally, i'll still be unlikely to move to kde4 even if this is implimented, but it is one of the largest issues holding me back, and i presume the same will be true for many users.)

This cannot be implemented unfortunately, due to the massive change in Architecture. Superkaramba widgets can be used on Plasma, but not native Kicker plugins.

surely there's some concievable workaround hiding in the marble, waiting to be found by some budding leonardo davinci coder.

i know it wont exactly be lean, but perhaps some software "layer" to sit between the two to mediate the differences in architecture.

It just seems too much of a loss to move forward and throw away all those hundreds and thousands of apps.

Admittedly i dont fully (nor barely "slightly") understand the issues from a coding perspective, but how about the ugly compromise of running KDE3's Kicker in KDE4?

is that doable?
(i'm pressuming easier in some distros than others, likely needing various workarounds, changes of useflags, maskings, etc. ?)
