Really I don't know if there are some limitations / issues /philosophical questions about to set "Droid Sans" as default KDE4's font, but I have just tried to switch all the KDE fonts to the Droid Font (and his monospace) and the visual result, for my tastes, is really really better than the actual default font.
Try it if you don't believe me, in my kubuntu droid font is provided by the official package "ttf-droid".

It isn't GPL licensed, so I am not sure it can be used. Also, according to wikipedia it is designed for use on small screens.

Ok understanding about GPL licence, I was forgetting a detail :)
anyway I'm using it in a 1920x1080 screen and it seems to be designed too for large screens...

most sans fonts with anti aliasing are excellent

you can pick a close gpl 2 font and edit it with fontforge. then you can suggest the resulting font here

I'm against resetting default fonts, because not all systems have all fonts installed. It's like going to a font website, installing a font from it and saying, "Hey, this font is really cool - it should be the default!"

There's nothing wrong with the current default font (DeJaVu Sans): it's clean and clearly readable. There's no reason to change it.

Don't you think that DeJaVu Sans is too fat?
Just to make me happy, have you ever tried the droid font as KDE4 font? :o

Could you upload screen-shot of your fonts section in kde system settings?

Liberation Sans ftw :)
Although, I myself use Bitstream Vera as my default (subpixel rendering on Bitstream gives me pixel perfect fonts)
