[Sonnet] [KDE] Nasty-word-removal

Fri Jul 10, 2009 2:05 am
There are a lot of apps out there that are developed to be used by kids. There are even a few distros that are kid-centric.

Even though I do not have kids myself, I understand there are many parents out there who do not wish their kids to see (much less understand) the more...colourful words of our langauge.

Sonnet, from what I can gather, is a system-wide spellchecker, now I'm no dev, but isnt it possible to get Sonnet to not only check for misspelt words, but check for the nasty ones? (It's a very similar method, as far as I can see) and, should it find such a word, it would automagically remove it/replace it/cover it up.

The reason I suggested this was because of a problem one of my friends had;

Their two year old is quite good with computers, he loves the internet. But he's taken himself into sites where the language is less then...suitible, for one of his age. One of his favorite words is (and excuse me here) "**** it"

I myself do not mind children learning about swear words, I just wish they only came accross them when they know it's full meaning.

Shouldn't removing such word be a firewall job? Outpost firewall (win) was able to remove adds even before they reach browser. Same could be done with banned words list.

Also, isn't sonnet used *after* you type, not *before*. Whats the point of removing thing that kid has already seen?

My apologies. Firewall tech isnt exactly something I know much about :P

I was also led to assume that Sonnet could do such a job, I chose it because, from what I've gathered, it is a 'desktop wide' system.

Disregard this idea.

who knows when there will be a serious conversation and some sentence will get an opposite meaning cause the word f__k is omitted from it

i expect the pc to blindly do any task given to it

better educate the kids than the pc
