Krusader has a really useful way of allowing users to quickly go UP in the directory tree.
It shows "go UP" (to the parent directory) as the first thing in the directory list (it's the ".." directory). I would really like to see this in Dolphin. It's a very small change but a big improvement in usability. This could be optional and disabled by default.

There is already an "up" toolbar button and you can click on any folder in the breadcrumb address bar to go up. I think adding yet another way to go up would be redundant and would needlessly clutter the file area.

I don't agree with that. And here's why. You can set up Dolphin to look like Konqueror: in split view mode and editable location bar (so, the breadcrumbs are not shown by default).
In this case, the only way to go up is by adding the UP button. But it can only be added to the toolbar, not in each panel (left and right). So, if you are in the left panel and I want to go up in the right panel, you have to first click somewhere in the right panel to select it and then click the up button. So that's 2 clicks to go up and it's very annoying. This feature should be optional and turned off by default. The ones who don't change Dolphin's default look (which is like Windows Explorer) probably don't need it. But for the rest of us who can't work without a twin panel file manager, it's very useful. It's very easy to implement and won't be in the way because it can be disabled by default. |

Wouldn't that be the same if the up-indicator was in each panel though? You would still have, to use your example, click on the right panel (if you're in the left) and then on the up-indicator - that is, two clicks in both cases. And maybe it's easy to implement, but it's even easier to just hit alt-up-arrow.

I'm not entirely sure I understand. If you have it set up in permanent split view with the breadcrumb bar turned off, why are you using dolphin to begin with? You are basically eliminating all the features that make it dolphin. If you want to use krusader, why don't you just use krusader rather than trying to turn dolphin into krusader? Dolphin isn't intended to be and advanced twin-panel file browser like krusader, or even as advanced as konqueror, it is intended to be pretty basic.

I think this is a really old traditional way to move through directories and I always liked it.
There was never something wrong with the good old '..' folder. Make to optional so everyone is able to choose to use it or not. |

There was something very wrong with the .. directory. You had to scroll back up to the beginning of the directory to find it. Configure dolphin to use backspace for this if you prefer up to back like i do. You can keep the alt-left for back. Problem solved

If someone ever tried to sell me a car with no reverse gear I would have the same reaction as if someone told me that a file manager did not have any way of going up one directory except by using a keyboard shortcut. A new user has to Google to find out how to go up one folder; thus this is clearly a bug. Suggestion is to simply add a down arrow button next to the right hand arrow button.
