Graphical UI's have used floppy disk since the time when 3" floppies came to market. Before that we had a bigger 5" floppies icons and Hard Drives icons as well for save function.
Since 2000 century we do not have floppies in use same way as it was a case on earlier. But still we use floppy disk icon to give visual information to save data. Does it have a sense at all anymore? We can not use USB-stick, CD/DVD or any other icon as well, becase we store data to all kind different places. To network, USB-sticks, CD/DVD-disks, Harddrive, SSD-drives, floppies, memorycards and so on. I have long time thought there should be somekind new icon for saving. It should be by the idea universal what fould with to almost all functions. The current floppydisk icon has good side it is in use on most GUI's so it is familiar everywhere. But Apple has even started to use only the text "Save" for it. I believe we could come out with the icon what resembles the "store" or "save" function. And as well I think it is not easy task because it is visual. But if we could get the idea what it could be, then we could even try to get the kde-artists postlist to think it if we could change the computer culture from past (if it needs changing!) about this small case. |

This idea is not really useful unless you have a specific suggestion for what to replace it with. Otherwise people won't know whether it is better or worse than the current choice.

I actually like the floppy because it is easily recognizable, and by now, it is pretty much synonymous with saving.
